According to legendary Southern food journalist and writer John Egerton in Southern Food: At Home, On the Road, In History, black-eyed peas are associated with a “mystical and mythical power to bring good luck” and have been a Southern staple for over three centuries. As for collard greens, they’re green like money and will ensure you a financially prosperous new year. And isn’t that what we all want anyway? Learn more here.
My sister-in-law shared her recipe for Texas Caviar (also known as Black-Eyed Pea Dip) several years ago, and it’s a good alternative to eating a bowl of black-eyed peas. We took this dip to our neighborhood gathering recently to get a jump-start on our 2025 good luck!
Texas Caviar - Black Eyed Pea Dip
Ingredients
- 1 can Black Eyed Peas
- 1 can Golden Hominy
- 2 lg Tomatoes, diced
- 1 lg Bell Pepper (any color), chopped finely
- 1/2 cup Purple Onion, chopped finely
- 1/2 cup Fresh Cilantro, Chopped
- 2 cloves Garlic, chopped
- 1/2 cup Japapenos, sliced (optional)
- 1 cup Hot Sauce
Instructions
- Drain black eyed peas and hominy very well
- Combine diced tomatoes, bell pepper, purple onion, garlic and cilantro.
- Mix up all ingredients together with 1 cup hot sauce (also add jalapenos if you want it spicy)
- This tastes best when made ahead of time, like 2 days before you want to serve it so the flavors can mix.
- Store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Tastes great with corn chips or tortilla chips.
