National Garage Sale Day – My Four Best Tips
National Garage Day is this Saturday, August 14. My neighbor is hosting a sale and I plan to add some of the things I have been intending to part with for some time. While having your own garage sale is a lot of work it can be a great way to move unwanted items out of...
What to Collect: Decorative Plates
I’ve shared two fun posts on collectibles – Hostess Plates and Salt Cellars. A traditional and classic trend in decorating is creating a wall of art with plates. Lately, I’ve been seeing Oyster Plate collections on Instagram. You can find some...
It’s a Narwhal Life – Sip and Tunes!

Hospitality is in my DNA. I founded Home with a Twist, a daughter’s twist on her mother’s traditions, in memory of my mother to celebrate her life and the gifts she shared with me. Mother loved to celebrate life’s occasions – big and small. She taught me how to prepare fabulous food, entertain guests with style and design a traditional home with a pop of color and a splash of animal print. Share my fondness of blending Mother’s mid-century style with a modern spin.

SAVE this reminder for the next time you talk yourself out of having people over.
Every excuse keeping you from hosting is sitting right here in my living room.
Cat-scratched sofa arm, torn carpet fibers, and a rug spot.
We convince ourselves our homes must look like pristine showrooms before we can open the door.
Nobody who loves you is auditing your upholstery. They came for the conversation and a warm welcome.
If you wait for perfection, another season slips by with an empty living room.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

SAVE this checklist before your next houseguests arrive.
After 40 years of welcoming people into my home, I have learned that true hospitality is simply removing friction before your guest even feels it.
Here are the little details I keep in our guest bathroom so nobody ever has to secretly search through medicine cabinets or ask for help:
• Extra toothbrushes and travel toothpaste
• Travel mouthwash and floss picks
• Feminine products placed openly in a pretty canister
• Makeup wipes, which also saves your good white linens from mascara
• Single-dose headache, antacid packets and allergy medicine.
• A little stain remover pen for quick dinner spills
• A dedicated stack of waffle hand towels right by the sink
• Extra toilet paper and tissues
When everything is out in plain sight, your guests can relax and feel completely cared for.
What is the one thing you always forget to pack when you stay with friends?
