John and I recently made a trip back home to Arkansas, and Chris flew in from New York for a visit with his 89 year old grandparents. He surprised his grandfather with a professionally produced cd called Knockn’ on 90! The lyrics were written by my dad, Jim Jenkins.
On our way home we stopped at Strawn’s Eat Shop in Shreveport for lunch, famous for their strawberry pie. So what would Holley wear on a road trip? Something comfy…of course! My travel style consisted of jeans worn with an old Gap t-shirt and topped with an Asian inspired kimono from F21, a cross-body bag, and a pair of Tory Burch gold sandals. Be sure to check out some of my Pinterest favorites featuring floral kimonos paired with jeans and a tee shirt…great for traveling.
Our hometown is Smackover, Arkansas. That’s where the romance began when John was a senior and I was a junior at Smackover High! How adorable is that? For a short weekend hometown visit, why not treat yourself to a cute pair of pajamas. I love how Anthropologie calls their PJs “sleep pants”. Bloomingdale’s has a great selection of Kate Spade sleepwear. And I have to admit, I’m smitten with her pajama set and matching robe called “things we love”….just like my hometown!
Downtown Smackover has some wonderful shops that are owned and operated by women. When I need a plant or flowers to send my mom, the Willow Florist is my go-to. The owners, Barbara Smith and Stacy Aycock, are a great mother and daughter team. From a simple flower arrangement to an extravagant wedding, these ladies know how to add flair to any event!
A high school friend, Rhanda Ray Wright, and her business partner, Lisa Lindsey, opened The Speckled Rooster Antique Shop and The Hen’s Nest just a year ago. Not only do they have beautiful antique furniture but also an amazing array of locally made gift items, from goat’s milk soap to Smackover-made BBQ sauce. And a bonus…The Hen’s Nest, serves homemade lunches prepared by church ladies that benefit local missions.
So, what do you wear when you’re doing a little flower market shopping or antiquing? For a hot summer day, my suggestion is a cool/comfy bohemian inspired maxi dress or skirt….also great for a class reunion. Dillard’s offers a wonderful selection of maxi dresses in both women’s and plus-size. With a maxi, you have the option of dressing it up a bit with low heels, or go casual with a pair of sandals. Check out my Pinterest board for all the options.
A lovely boutique that has been a Smackover establishment for 50 years is The Classic Dress Shop. So of course, I just had to stop by! The owner, Mrs. Gussie Gray, is 92 years old, and she and her sister, Bernice (Bea) Kinard, still manage the Classic! With their “classic” taste and style….not a single thing is slowing these two down!
All that being said…there’s nothing like going home! And now my parents are “Knock’n on 90”….how did that happen?
