Feeling blue this January? Holley is haute today with her take on how to lift your spirits through your wardrobe. Enjoy!
Do you remember the movie, The Adventures in Babysitting? The best line in the movie is, “Nobody leaves here without singing the blues.” I love that scene but have always thought the color blue gets such a bad rap. So this week, I want to lift up the color blue and give it the respect it deserves! Can I get an Amen?
So, two things you need to know about the color blue:
- It may have a sad reputation…
- …but the way I see it, Blue is a spirit lifter!
If there is a month that needs spirit lifting, it would be January. One positive thing about this month is that it is a new beginning. It’s the month you can convince yourself you will lose 10 pounds and you really do like to exercise! Plus, it’s exciting to think about all the cute workout clothes you can wear. Did someone give you a gift card to Lululemon over the holidays? No? Hmm…I didn’t get one either, but I have no problem shopping at Target and Old Navy. Gap also has great fitness clothes for those times I like to pretend to be someone I’m not. Oops, I did not mean to say that….self-reflection error.
Another great thing about the color blue is the number of choices of blue jeans that are available. Does it blow your mind that you can actually spend hundreds of dollars for one pair of jeans? It does me, but if I ever find a jean that makes me look 10 pound slimmer, I might consider making the splurge. Never say never….right? Citizens of Humanity’s high rise and super dark flares would be tempting to try. Some of my friends love NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans) and I still wear a pair of Christopher Blue Denim jeans that I purchased several years ago. If you love to wear skinny jeans, be sure to check out the pin, “Dos & Don’ts of Cuffing Your Jeans with Ankle Boots.”
The good news is no matter what style of jeans you prefer, a good pair of jeans will last for years.
Let’s talk about blue coats. For the winter months, think about adding a blue faux fur vest or coat to your wardrobe. Does that sound luxurious or what? You know those days when it’s cold out and you are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring? Think about purchasing a blue overcoat that will double as a spring transition piece. One of my favorite pins is a blue cape worn over a white blouse with a pair of jeans. Looks like just what the doctor ordered to me!
But if January has you feeling a little down, think about incorporating some blue bling or a blue handbag into your wardrobe. Did you know that “bag matching” was back in style? Yep…it is on-trend for your bag, jewelry, outfit, and shoes to match. Even better….I’m pretty sure “Dr. Style’s” prescription for a stack of bracelets or a statement necklace will give you the perfect dose of happy! Sounds better than a B12 shot to me!
A great book to start off the New Year with is A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet: (Southern Stories of Faith, Family, and Fifteen Pounds of Bacon) by Sophie Hudson.
Just like the color blue, this book will lift your spirits high (cue song: Higher, Higher…by Otis Redding)! Like a great book, music definitely lifts my spirit! So, let’s talk about what to wear when you just need to dance. I’m not talking about club dancing or at a fancy wedding. I’m talking about dancing in your living room when no one else is watching. All you really need is a good pair of sneakers and sweats. May I suggest a pair of blue suede sneakers by Adidas, just in case you need to bring out your inner Elvis!
I think we should have an honest discussion about the color blue. According to my research, “blue is the overwhelming favorite color. Blue is seen as trustworthy, dependable, and committed. It also symbolizes stability, loyalty, confidence, intelligence and peace.” So what should you do with that information? Think about adding something blue to your wardrobe…of course. Whether it’s a new blue bathrobe or a pair of blue stilettos, be committed, be confident and don’t forget to dance! What better way to begin the New Year than singing the blues!
