I’m pretty sure if you live in Texas and don’t own a piece of leather, it’s considered a sin. Sounds like lyrics to a country song….right? Nope, it’s just the plain ole’ truth! So, two things you need to know about me:
- I’ve been a Texan for 37 years…
- …and I do love wearing leather….of course!
But here’s the deal….in today’s fashion world leather is no longer just a Western look and is not just for cold weather. In fact, it is considered a spring and summer transition piece. Plus, it is so sophisticated that it can be integrated into your work wardrobe and is guaranteed to give you a “too cool for school” look. How hip is that?
Let’s get started and talk about how to incorporate leather into a professional look. And please know, when I say leather that also includes faux leather. I want to talk about skirts first. Leather skirts can be tricky, especially a leather pencil skirt. If a pencil skirt is your look, make sure the fit is perfect and not too tight. The best way to complement a leather pencil skirt is with a sweater or a flowy blouse.
Also, think about a front-tuck, and be sure to check out the “how to tuck” on our Pinterest board. This little trick takes the emphasis away from your hips and gives you a leaner look. Another fashion tip is to purchase one or two sizes larger when investing in pencil skirts. Trust me, this is a tip every model swears by! Pleated and full leather skirts are on-trend and look great with a sweater or button-down blouse. Just drape a coat over your shoulders, add a pair of pumps or booties and you will be the envy of everyone in the office!
Leather and suede jackets are so versatile, and you can create so many outfits with them. One way I love to wear a leather jacket is with a maxi or midi skirt. For a fun party look, consider pairing a leather jacket with a tulle skirt. Just add boots or flats. A fashion tip for wearing a maxi skirt is to add large and bold jewelry. Just think of it this way, the more fabric…the bigger the accessories. Another great look is to wear a leather jacket over a dress.
This gives you another option for your office wardrobe and is a great look for meetings. With a leather jacket draped over your shoulders, the next thing you know you may be receiving a promotion or asked to chair a committee! Sounds like a bonus to me!
Leather is now considered a transitional year around piece. For a spring transition, think about wearing it with white pants or jeans. A look I love is a black leather jacket with a striped or floral skirt. Just add booties, and you will have created an awesome “it’s almost spring/summer look!”
Another way to get you in the spirit of spring is by wearing a spring hue, like a pink or blue leather jacket with your jeans. A fun and casual spring look is culottes and crop pants. Just pair them with a leather jacket, flats, or sneakers. Or, even think about investing in a pair of leather culottes. I’m pretty sure that will put a little spring in your step!
Leather pants and leggings are no longer just for biker chicks. For a spring transition look, wear a light weight jacket over a pair of leather pants. This looks great in the office too. Just remember to wear slacks to the office…not leggings. Leather slacks tend to have a relaxed look and are more flattering. Another great office look is black 
leather slacks, black top, and a camel knee length jacket worn with pumps. For a sophisticated look wear a pair of leather slacks and a white blouse. Wow…how classic does that sound?
I’ve saved the best for last….if you think you can handle this! Are you considered a “cool chick” or an “it girl”? If you are not sure what I’m talking about, check out my Pinterest board, “Too Cool for School.” I’ve always wanted to be that girl. When I was 14 years old, I wore thick glasses, braces, and a whole lot of awkwardness. I remember talking my mom into letting me purchase a red leather vest with fringe (truthfully…I think it was plastic).
Guess what? It did not make me look cool, and the local rock stars did not come knocking on my door. But here’s the deal….I never gave up and eventually married the lead guitarist from the rock band, The Heavy Loade. True Story!
So to all of that…I say this: Forget the red fringed vest, but do think about being the cool girl by rocking a leather jacket. And most important of all….never give up on your rock star dream! Mic drop!
