Life’s Little Wins: My Week in Review

I am enjoying “retirement.” I am busy, but my days are filled with things that give me so much joy. I start my day when I want to, creating new projects in my home office, taking Hazel for walks, swimming in the pool, and making dinner. I have to pinch myself when I realize I am home. I missed my family and my friends. I do have alot to share about my time in Maine as an “Accidental Innkeeper,” but that will come for later.

Hospitality Coaching

I have blogged for over ten years, but writing and working full-time was a challenge. Happily, I can now give Home with a Twist my full attention. I have many exciting and fun ideas to grow this community, where I share everything my mother taught me. In addition to writing digital courses, which you will learn more about this Thursday, I will coach women’s groups to share the art of hosting gatherings with confidence rather than chasing perfection. I am so excited to have the opportunity to meet Wendy Conklin in a few weeks. You may know her as Chair Whimsy here on Instagram. She is a boutique chair designer and teaches upholstery classes. Check out her Instagram page – it is stunning. She is hosting a small dinner in her home, and I snagged a ticket! I can’t wait to meet her and have her sign my copy of her book Life Whimsy – a book I read and savor daily. The messaging and photos are like no other book I have read. It is truly a jewel and the perfect coffee table book.

Give me all the Pumpkin Spice

I found a new recipe Pumpkin Layered Magic Cake, from Betty Crocker that I plan to test drive – I am sure Mr. Twist and Phoebe will not mind being in charge of quality assurance. The magic is after pouring the cake batter on the bottom, followed by the pumpkin layer, the two batters switch during baking! I’ll share the results on my Instagram community soon!

Start your day with my version of a power bowl, which packs up to 53 grams of protein:

One serving of @kodiakcakes protein oatmeal 10 gr.
Half scoop of @previnex vanilla protein powder 12 gr.
5 oz container @oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt no sugar added 15 gr.
One serving @go_raw organic pumpkin seeds 8 gr.
One serving @ratiofood coconut almond granola 8 gr.
Fresh fruit

Prepare oatmeal and add in protein powder. Stir to mix. Place in bowl, then top with yogurt, seeds, granola, and fresh fruit.

1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese, at room temperature

1 1/2 tsp lemon zest

1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice

Don`t pass up those vintage linens just because they smell. I found this charming $14 hand knitted afghan @ltolestatesales that went from whoa to wow in just a tub of water and @wooliteusa. I let it dry in the morning sun, and now it`s ready for a chilly day!

The recipe was originally called "Some More" and was intended to feed 16 scouts. It called for 16 graham crackers, eight chocolate bars, 16 marshmallows, and eight roasting sticks. We even toured the Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum in Gibsland. That was interesting! Such a piece of history since the infamous couple were from Dallas, and my Daddy pumped gas for them when he was about 8-9 years old when they`d stop in Fort Worth.

I met this gorgeous woman @catherinewhite.art several years ago via Instagram. We became "pen pals" via our DMs and learned we have a lot in common.

Last night, she and her husband hosted a lovely dinner party, and I witnessed her hospitality in action. Delicious welcome cocktails, cold avocado soup in the garden, a gourmet dinner ending with a delicate peach cake.

Catherine has become one of my closest friends. I love spending time with her. We hear so many negative things about social media, but in this case, finding her makes me a winner!

Easy summer dinner idea - we buy bags of frozen shrimp from Costco. They are a quick thaw, so you can whip up shrimp tacos in a jiffy. SAVE this post for later.

Shrimp Taco seasoning:

1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp brown sugar

Mix spices in a bowl. Toss in one pound (or, in my case, 20 pieces of shrimp). Toss to coat all the shrimp. Heat 2 tsp olive oil in a cast iron or regular skillet. Add shrimp in a single layer and cook two minutes on each side. Serve with whatever you like - taco shells, tortillas, or over a salad.

We stayed a week at the stunning @vidanta resorts, and it was beyond amazing. Blue waters, white sand, friendly staff, delicious food, and daily activities - you should have seen us at water aerobics. Lazy days by the pool, swimming in the ocean, and we had the best seats a @cirquedusoleil! ⛱️ Happy hour BTW is noon to 2 p.m. 🍸🍹
