It amazes me how architects and home builders still design small laundry rooms. I guess they don’t understand that, not unlike the kitchen, the laundry room is the second heart of the home. My laundry room is a 6×6 passthrough to the garage. I have a stackable washer and dryer, three litter boxes, and a verticle space for all my laundry and cleaning supplies. Several years ago, I enlisted the help of Elizabeth Jones, a professional organizer of Nest & Transformation, for guidance on maximizing the space for my needs and designing an Elfa shelving system. Since then, I have added some features to help me stay organized.

I needed super-easy access to laundry detergent, so I bought Anchor Hocking lidded glass jars from Walmart. One for dryer sheets, one for powder OxiClean, and a third for detergent pods.  I found custom labels on Etsy here. You can tell the seller exactly what product you want listed on the waterproof label.

For liquids, I ordered two glass jugs, one for vinegar and one for bleach, from the same vendor on Etsy who makes the labels here. I opted for the screw top, not the pump. I often use vinegar for cleaning and laundry, so it’s easier to pour than use the pump dispenser.

Another space-saving tool is a lazy Susan. It makes it easy to access what I need, such as stain remover spray, Clorox cleaner, wrinkle release, laundry boost, clothes pins, and goo gone — all the supplies I need for laundry or to clean up litter box messes. I labeled each slot so you know exactly where all the supplies are (and go).

I also like multi-purpose bins from The Container Store for storing cleaning and dusting supplies, laundry bags, and other essentials. These bins maximize vertical space. They come in all sizes and colors, but I prefer the translucent color to see what’s inside and the medium to large size. The Etsy labels fit on the bins, too.

I have a shelf up high with a back stock of hand soap and once-in-a-while supplies that I can access with a step ladder. The tiny but mighty room is finished with two drawers for cleaning rags, wet jet pads, and other supplies. I’ve packed a lot in this space! I’ve created a gallery space on the opposite wall, but I plan to make updates soon, so stay tuned.
