We spend years waiting for the new rug, the reupholstered chair, or the day the cat finally stops scratching the side of the sofa before we feel ready to invite anyone inside.
We hide the flaws and close our doors, thinking people want an untouched museum.
In forty years of opening my front door, I have learned the exact opposite. Nobody relaxes in a showroom. People let their guard down when they see a worn carpet, a stack of books by the reading chair, and a host who welcomes them into real life instead of a staged set.
Your home does not need to be flawless to offer comfort. It just needs warmth, soft lighting, and an open door.
What is one little imperfection in your home you are learning to make peace with this season?
The biggest mistake we make when hosting dinner is treating our menu like an audition for culinary school.
We plan three appetizers, an elaborate entrée, three hot sides, and a scratch dessert—and then spend the entire evening sweating over stove burners while everyone else is laughing in the living room.
